July is an intrusive narrator who throughout the narrative flaunts her control over her tale and sometimes calls attention to what is left unsaid, so that the horrors of slavery are mainly conveyed in her silences, while her humorous perspective articulates a story that focuses on the survival and agency of black subjects. Andrea Levy’s The Long Song takes readers to pre- and post-Emancipation Jamaica through the voice of July, an old black woman who in the final years of the 19th century reminisces about her past. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It jerked again, and he definitely was lying down, head thunking against the bottom of the cart whenever it went over a rock or pothole in the road. ![]() ![]() She’s brilliant as Avasarala and even makes us think at times that maybe the book got Avasarala’s timeline all wrong. It helps that we have Shohreh Aghdashloo playing that part. ![]() In the books, Avasarala doesn’t come around until much later on, but her character is so central in the story that it needed to be on screen as soon as possible. One of the biggest changes to the book was the introduction of Earth’s U.N.
